Managing Device Settings

If necessary, you can reset the default ImagePRINT device settings such as default filenames and folders. Most of device settings are technical and should not need resetting. If you require assistance, be sure to contact us.

To manage device settings:

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings>Printers.
  2. Right-click the ImagePRINT driver, and select Properties.
  3. Click the Device Settings tab.
  4. From here you can:
    • Set default file
    • Set the default printer operation
    • Set default driver control options
    • Set default debugging options
    • Set default server share options
    • Set advanced settings (ImagePRINT TIFF Driver only)

Setting Output File Options

You can change the default folder, filename naming conventions and file type used by ImagePRINT to store the images you generate. You can also change the default for multiple file generation (one file/multiple images or one file/one image) and fill order (placement of the significant pixel in TIFF images).

To set output file options:

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings>Printers.
  2. Right-click the ImagePRINT driver, and select Properties.
  3. Click the Device Settings tab.
  4. Click the button beside Output File to expand the list.
  5. To reset the default folder for storing files generated by ImagePRINT
    • At Path For Output Files, click the Browse button, select the folder and click OK.

Note: If the file is to be created on a specific server share, type the output file path as the UNC name (for example; \\servername\sharename\directory\subdir). To store image files on the server share, you must also specify the Access to Server Share options. Do not use the UNC name for local hard drives.

  6. To reset the default filename
    • At Prefix For Output File, type the name for the file.

If you enable Multiple Pages For Output File, the file name you enter will be the default file name for the output file.

If you disable Multiple Pages For Output File (one file per page), the file name you enter is appended with a number indicating the page sequence.

Note: The numbering sequence is a little odd. If the prefix for output file ends with a number, for example, AAAA15, the first page generated will be AAAA15, the second will be AAAA16, and so forth. If the prefix does not contain a number, a number is appended to the prefix for each page after but not including the first, so page 1 is AAAA, page 2 is AAAA01, page 3 is AAAA02, and so forth.

  7. To reset the default output file type
    • Click the button beside File Description Options to expand the list.
    • Select the type from the Output File Type drop-down list.
      • For the TIFF driver, choose from one of the following:

TIFF Group 3 1-bit B/W: This is a Tagged Image Format (TIF) file, built using the compression scheme used by standard group 3 FAX machines. Modified Huffman encoding (MH).

TIFF Group 3 (2D) 1 bit B/W: This TIF file uses a 2-dimensional coding technique (MR) to get somewhat better compression than straight group 3 code.

TIFF Group 4 1 bit B/W: This TIF file format uses the 2-dimensional compression scheme (MMR) which is used by Group 4 FAX machines.

DCX 1-bit B/W: This file format is a variant of the PCX format (below); it is used by the Intel SatisFAXtion and certain other CAS modems. Uses Run Length compression.

PCX 1-bit B/W: This file format was created by ZSoft for their PC Paintbrush program. Uses Run Length compression.

PNG 1-bit B/W: Uses Flate compression,

BMP 1-bit B/W: A Windows image format that is uncompressed.

      • For the Color driver, choose from one of the following:

JPEG 24-bit Color: Lossy, but creates the best quality and smallest file size for continuous tone images. To adjust the quality versus the file size, use JPEG Output Quality setting. As a rule of thumb, a file compressed to 10% of its original size will be visually acceptable with no obvious compression artefacts. Compress to 2-4% if lower quality is acceptable.

BMP 24-bit Color: Lossless format, but creates very large, uncompressed files.

TIFF Pack Bits 24-bit Color: Original file compression format for bitonal and color images. This is also a lossless format, but images are large. Uses Run Length compression.

PNG 8-bit Grey: Uses Flate compression,

PNG 24-bit Color: Uses Flate compression,

      • For the PDF driver, choose from one of the following:

PDF (1 bit black and white) - Modified Modified Read encoding (MMR)

PDF (8 bit grey scale) - Flate encoding

PDF (8 bit color) - Flate encoding

PDF (24 bit color) - Configurable lossiness

  8. To reset the default for multiple page generation
    • Click the button beside File Description Options to expand the list
    • From the Multiple Pages Per Output File drop-down list, select Enabled or Disabled.

This option is available only for TIFF and DCX file types. If you need a single-page-per-file DCX file, select ZSoft PCX as the file type. Choose from:

Enabled: Multiple page images are saved into one file. The name you specify as the Prefix for output file is the default name for the file.

Disabled: Each page image is saved in a separate file. The name you specify as the Prefix for the file contains the first page; the file name appended by a sequence number contains the second page, and so forth.

  9. To reset the default for fill order
    • Click the button beside File Description Options to expand the list
    • From the Fill Order For Image File drop-down list, select Reversed or Normal.

To control the order in which bits within the bytes of a TIFF file are filled, choose from:

Normal: The most significant bit of the byte is the leftmost pixel in the image.

Reversed: The most significant bit in the byte is the rightmost pixel in the image.

  10. When you are finished, click Apply or OK.

Setting Printer Operation

You can set ImagePRINT to emulate another printer or print output device such as a fax. If necessary, you can specify that printer's unprintable regions.

To set printer operation options:

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings>Printers.
  2. Right-click the ImagePRINT driver, and select Properties.
  3. Click the Device Settings tab.
  4. Click the button beside Printer Operation to expand the list.
  5. For the Color driver, set the Printer Output to either 24-bit Color or Monochrome. Note that selecting Monochrome automatically changes the Output File Type to TIFF Group 3. If you want to create a JPEG file, leave this setting at 24-bit color.
  6. To reset the default printer emulation
    • Click Emulate Printer, then select the printer name from the drop-down list. Choose from:

Custom: Use the default settings for the ImageMAKER print driver.

(Classic Fax Resolution): Set the ImageMAKER printer driver to print at the best resolution for conventional fax machines.

(Near Fax Square-Pixel): Set the ImageMAKER print driver to print at 200x200 dpi, the lowest possible resolution that accommodates printing square pixels.

Other Printers: Emulate another printer installed on your system. See Creating Exact Copies of Printed Documents.

  7. To reset unprintable regions

Note: ImagePRINT fills in the Unprintable Regions settings with the settings for your printer. The image will be printed only within those margins, so that page numbering and exact text positioning is maintained. If necessary, you can change these.

    • Click the button beside Unprintable Regions to expand the list.
    • Adjust the size of the unprintable region for Left, Right, Top and Bottom.
  8. When you are finished, click Apply or OK.

Setting Control Dialog Application Settings

When ImagePRINT starts, the application called the Control Dialog starts so that you can change the settings for a specific job. The options in this section control the behavior of the control dialog and are preset.

Important Note: We recommend not changing them without our assistance.

To set control dialog application options:

  1. the Start menu, select Settings>Printers.
  2. Right-click the ImagePRINT driver, and select Properties.
  3. Click the Device Settings tab.
  4. Click the button beside Control Dialog Application to expand the list.
  5. To reset the default application name
    • At Application Name, do one of the following: click the Browse button and select the folder and file that contains the control dialog, then click OK - or - type the path and filename of the control dialog.

Note: If the file is located on a server share, type the file path as the UNC name (for example; \\servername\sharename\directory\subdir). To access a file on the server share, you must also specify the Access to Server Share options. Do not use the UNC name for local hard drives.

  6. To reset security for the control dialog
    • At Security Context For Dialog, select User or System from the drop-down list.

User: Select this option if the control dialog starts in the user context. This restricts it s to only those system resources that the user has access to.

System: The system security context is used by system services, and is the service that the Windows NT spooler normally runs in; you do not typically start a control dialog in this context.

Select this option if your control dialog is a 16-bit application. All 16-bit applications run, by default, in a single virtual machine (VM). This VM is created for and by an application called Windows On Windows (WOW). WOW starts in the system security context, so any 16-bit application started in the system security context are run in one WOW/VM combination. If you start a 16-bit application in the user security context, it is allocated a separate WOW/VM combination. While 16-bit applications

ImagePRINT Review Copy can intercommunicate using messages within a single VM, messages will not jump from one VM to another.

  7. To reset the memory space option
    • At Run In Separate Memory Space, leave the setting as System Default.

Use this option to control whether the control dialog starts up in its own private memory space, or in the common memory space used by all 16-bit applications. The option has no meaning for 32-bit applications and is unavailable if the application you specified as the control dialog is 32-bits or non-existent.

This option is set when you install ImagePRINT. We do not recommend changing it.

  8. To reset the control dialog timeout
    • At Control Dialog Connection Timeout, type the number of seconds before communication with the control dialog is abandoned.

When the control dialog starts, it establishes communication with ImagePRINT. ImagePRINT checks for communication with the control dialog for a specific length of time and then abandons the attempt. Use this option to reset the amount of time for the driver to wait before continuing to save the file.

Note: The value 0 is interpreted as “Wait forever.”

  9. When you are finished, click Apply or OK.

Setting Debugging Options

Reset debugging options only with our assistance. These options are used to generate a log file; the log file, while highly cryptic, helps us determine the nature of your problem with ImagePRINT and possible solutions.

The log file is a text file that you can view and print using Notepad. If the log file becomes too large, you can rename or erase the file.

Important Note: We recommend not changing these options without our assistance.

To set debugging options:

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings>Printers.
  2. Right-click the ImagePRINT driver, and select Properties.
  3. Click the Device Settings tab.
  4. Click the button beside Debugging Options to expand the list.
  5. To reset the default log capture option
    • At Capture Log Into File, select Enabled or Disabled from the drop-down list.

Enabled: A log file will be generated containing the printer driver UI component and the port monitor information.

Disabled: A log file will not be generated.

  6. To reset the default clear log file option
    • At Erase Log File At System Startup, select Enabled or Disabled from the drop-down list.

Enabled: The log file will be deleted each time the computer is restarted.

Disabled: The log file will not be deleted each time the computer is restarted.

  7. To reset the default log file name

Note: Locate the log file on a local disk that has enough room for 8kb/job.

    • At Name of Log File, do one of the following: click the Browse button and type the name of the file to contain logging information, then click OK - or - type the path and filename of the log file.
  8. When you are finished, click Apply or OK.

Setting Server Share Access

If required, you can set ImagePRINT to save the output file directly on a server, rather saving it on a local drive and manually transferring it to the server later.

Before Starting: Set up a special, restricted user ID which has access to limited areas of the server - the spooler runs in a System Services security context and does not have access to any of the resources of the network.

To set server share options:

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings>Printers.
  2. Right-click the ImagePRINT driver, and select Properties.
  3. Click the Device Settings tab.
  4. Click the button beside Access Specific Share On Server to expand the list.
  5. To set the default server share option
    • At Use Specific Share On Server, select Enabled or Disabled from the drop-down list.

Enabled: ImagePRINT saves generated files on the server. Note that any file which you specify must be a UNC name (for example: \\server\sharename\dir\filename); the spooler does not have access to your local drive mappings.

Disabled: ImagePRINT saves generated files on a local drive only.

  6. To set the default server account name
    • At Server Account Name, type the account name.
    • If a password is required, click the Password button, type and confirm the password, then click OK.
  7. When you are finished, click Apply or OK.
